Collection of Carrie Munn materials, ca. 1943-1947.

The collection is comprised of one scrapbook (16 in. x. 11.5 in. x 1 in.), 5 black and white photographs, and two pages of brief comments written by Orson Munn, Jr. about his mother's life and work. The scrapbook is primarily comprised of newspaper articles focusing on Carrie Munn's social life, the opening of her shop, and some description of her designs. Three of the photographs are portraits of Carrie Munn; one is a photograph of Munn with James Montgomery Flagg taken while Flagg was drawing her likeness; the fifth is a portrait of Patricia Munn (Mrs. Orson Munn, Jr.) in a wedding gown.

Carrie Munn was born Carolyn Nunder in Buffalo, New York on January 29, 1898. In 1924 she married Orson D. Munn, a lawyer and owner of the Scientific American magazine. Their only child, Orson D. Munn, Jr. was born in 1925. Before her marriage, Munn ran her own dress shop and designed the clothing sold in it. In the early 1940s, she opened a design firm and called it the Carrie Munn Shop. Located at 640 Madison Avenue in New York City, the business flourished during the 1940s and into the 1950s....
